CV Tips for Australia

Do not include a photo unless your industry expects one.

In most Australian industries, CV photos are unusual and can inadvertently introduce bias concerns; modelling, performance, and some hospitality roles are exceptions, but for the majority of applications a photo adds nothing and may cause a recruiter to pause.

Mention work rights or visa status when relevant.

Australian employers legally cannot assume your right to work, and failing to address it can stall your application; a brief note — "Australian Permanent Resident" or "Subclass 482, no sponsorship required" — removes the uncertainty upfront.

Two to three pages can be acceptable for experienced candidates.

Australian CV conventions are less strict than UK norms on length; senior professionals with ten or more years of relevant experience are not expected to compress everything onto two pages, and doing so can thin out the evidence that makes experienced candidates competitive.

Include referees or note that references are available on request.

Australian job applications commonly expect referee details or a clear statement that references are available; leaving this section out entirely can create an impression of incomplete preparation, particularly for government and large-enterprise roles.
